At present the main interest in the Chilean presidential elections, due in December, is the contest between the two left-of-centre candidates, Soledad Alvear and Michelle Bachelet, for the ruling Concertación's presidential candidacy. Although Bachelet is far ahead of Alvear in the polls, either candidate looks set to beat the Alianza por Chile coalition's nominee, Joaquín Lavín.
